“Sleep!” – It might seem to be merely a long rest (a natural behaviour) after the day’s work, but sleep has a lot to do with your health. Those who are deprived of and suffer from insomnia, end up taking medicines like Melatonin. Actually, sleep is a very interesting subject to explore!

Understanding Sleep: Peeping into our body!

Do you know, while we are asleep, our brain remains active? Yes! We have neurotransmitters that act on various nerve cells controlling our sleep and awakening. While some of the neurons keep a part of our brain active keeping us awake, others present at the base, functions when we are asleep, switching off the active signals. This is how we fall asleep.

Now, sleep goes through two main stages – NREM and REM.

NREM or Non-Rapid Eye Movement

In one word, it is a dreamless sleep. During Non-Rapid Eye Movement, your brain remains inactive, but you will be moving. NREM further can be divided into three sections:

  • Pre-Sleep – During this phase, the body muscles remain relaxed. Both your breathing as well as heart rate slow down.
  • Light Sleep – Light sleep simply means you are sleeping lightly. Hence, you can also be woken up quite easily. And you won’t feel any sort of confusion after waking up.
  • Slow wave sleep – This is when you are in deep sleep. You would feel confused or disoriented after someone wakes you up.

REM or Rapid Eye Movement

Another stage is Rapid Eye Movement and this is when you dream. Your eyes keep moving randomly from one side to another as if you see something. Unlike NREM, your brain remains active in REM, but muscles are also relaxed. It has a psychological similarity to the state of waking.

Now – Sleeplessness!

There are also people who are deprived of this luxury of sleep, courtesy their hectic schedules and disturbances in daily life. Not just that, but this sleeplessness also moves on to increasing a number of health issues that can, at an extreme, be fatal. This problem is termed as insomnia.

Few of the common symptoms of sleep disorder are –

  • Difficulty to sleep
  • Waking up frequently while in sleep
  • Nightmares
  • Feeling tired during the day

If these go untreated, you will expose yourself to further health issues. There are natural remedies to cure sleeplessness. For example –

  • Yoga and meditation
  • Bath with warm water before sleep
  • Take warm milk before going to bed
  • Avoid taking heavy meals before sleeping

But acute insomnia has to be treated with medical help – like Melatonin. These drugs although used for temporary treatment, work instantly helping you to have an undisturbed sleep of long hours. Additionally, you will wake up refreshing, the next morning.
